Senator Dick Black’s remarks at the recent American’s for Prosperity event are so inaccurate that it is hard to take him seriously, except that he represents Virginia’s 13th District in the Virginia General Assembly. For example, at the end of Trevor Baratko’s news article, Black is quoted as saying that “For nine straight years we have not had a major hurricane strike the United States mainland.” Did he really forget that in 2012 Hurricane Sandy, aka Superstorm Sandy, devastated New York City? Reading such a statement should cause readers to question every other statement the Senator made, and rightly so.

Global warming is not “kind of hokey” or “silly from the outset,” as Black describes. Global warming is a measurable physical phenomenon. In the publication Climate Change: Evidence and Causes, the British Royal Society and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences report that since 1900, the Earth’s average surface air temperature has increased by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, other physical observations such as reduced Arctic sea ice and increased ocean heat content, as well as observations in nature such as the poleward shifts of temperature-sensitive species fish, mammals, insects, etc., provide inarguable evidence that global warming is real.

EPA’s Clean Power Plan (CPP) is not, as Black describes, “part of a government scheme to send billions in taxpayer funds to ‘wind and solar scams’ and ‘billionaire liberals.’ Instead, the CPP is a plan to protect public health from the effects of breathing polluted air. In 2013, the World Health Organization classified air pollution as a carcinogen. So, because the EPA’s mission is to protect human health and the environment and because the CPP will decrease air pollution, I do hope the EPA is, as Black puts it, “extreme to the Nth degree.” Doesn’t Dick Black want to stop Richmond from repeatedly being the Asthma Capital of the U.S.? The American Lung Association, the American Public Health Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all endorsed EPA’s CPP.  Why doesn’t Dick Black?

Check out Dick Black’s other statements for yourself. For me, I know that Dick Black’s positions do not agree with mine. I plan to let him know this when I vote this Fall. I hope you do, too!
